Keeping you safe

I’ve been looking through our latest Health and Safety catalogue recently, it’s full of the things anyone might need.  We all have to comply with numerous regulations which can be a pain, but it’s for everyone’s well-being and really is essential.  Fortunately Sign-Rite has been helping firms meet their H & S obligations for many years.  Because I spend a lot of my time up a ladder or in a cherry-picker fitting signs, I know just how important these regs are.

I’ve learnt a lot over the years and thought you might benefit from my some of my thoughts.

First perform a full, site safety audit with a pen in one hand, a notepad in the other and the relevent regulations fresh in your mind.  Once you’ve made a shopping list, sit down with our H & S catalogue and a cuppa.  Simply quote the page no. and code and let us sort the rest.  We can assist you on-site and suggest appropriate options and sign materials if you wish.  Remember, there is always a balance to be had between: visibility, durability, quality and cost.  However, none of this can override compliance with the regs.

Obviously there have to be various fire exit, no smoking, first aid station and fire extinguisher signs but don’t forget your access points, fire assembly points, gas/water/utility terminals, fork truck access, trip hazards and no entry signs.  Multi-lingual signs may be appropriate, especially where deliveries arrive from overseas.

Will these notices need to be visible in the dark?  That’s no problem, as we can supply illuminated, reflective and luminous versions

Although not strictly H & S think about site & road signs, these are particularly important on medium and large-sized premises.  Visitors and delivery drivers need to be informed and guided around your site, often in alternative languages.  Floor marking is a service we can also offer to guide people around and prevent them wandering off!

A local, premium food producer required signage which was totally bespoke.  It had specific, non-standard text and needed to be repositionable.  My solution was to suggest magnetic signs for ease of use, they were steam cleanable too, very useful.

If you’ve got any glass doors on the premises, they can be easily walked into.  How about applying some lettering or graphics to remind people it is there?  Frosted vinyl works well because it is visible but subtle and allows the light through.

All companies must meet the current HSE regulations with the latest, approved signage and equipment.  We supply all of these, just tell us what you need or call us to chat through the options.  If it can’t be provided off-the-shelf we’ll make it to suit your requirements, all part of the service.  Indeed this flexibility and quick turnaround is something we are proud of.  Sign-Rite UK is here to make Health and Safety compliance less of a puzzle or chore for you.

Stay safe (but don’t worry about it too much!)

Everyone wants Added Value these days.   Jobs we’ve done illustrate how to “add value” to your image.   An entrepreneur wanted to open a lingerie shop in Ludlow, Shropshire, but were without strong opinions on their branding.  After a site … Continue reading

That’s a wrap folks!

Hello again, John Spilsbury here, with this month’s story about vehicle wrapping for a local, Leominster firm.

I rested my creative mind for this job as the customer supplied the design (it’s their day job).  I got them started by supplying them with the van’s outline so they could use it to devise their “wave” image, which covered 75% of the vehicle.  Something new for us was the QR code they generated.   I’ve started seeing these square ‘barcodes’ all over the place, in adverts and on packaging: A smartphone with the right App takes a photo of the code and it will link to a webpage of the product, company, offer details or whatever.  It’s a solution to providing masses of information without ruining a design’s aesthetics.  QR codes are fairly new in this part of the world but seem rather interesting, so watch this space…  Anyway, once the design was passed to us we tweaked it slightly to print and cut the vinyl.

We want our customer to be very happy with our finished work, so we selected special vinyl, allowing us to mould it into the tricky recesses on the van’s side panels – a real craftsman’s job.  After a day’s careful application the van was looking tidy – and it was good to use my skills, after completing an “Advanced Vehicle Wrapping” course in Bristol.

Some do’s and don’ts of wrapping:

It can’t hide vehicle blemishes like rust, dents or scratches.

Smooth panels are easier to cover than deep recesses, eg. early Sprinter vans are known to be difficult.

Any colour and almost any design is possible.

Typical wrap lifespan is 3 years after which it can be easily removed

Metallic, carbon effect, pearlescent and matt finishes are available.

Normally the job would end with delivery, a satisfied customer and of course payment, the important bit. This time however I tried something new – moving pictures!  It’s OK to describe how we do things but a video can show it much better: have a look on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKMAIbTe1NE&feature=feedu

There was a lot more that could have been filmed, but it was enough to get started, and the raw footage needed some serious tidying, but I sat down with a brew and got editing.  Our software is nice and easy to use but still gives a great end result.  Of course there was a bit of cursing and muttering when it wouldn’t do what I wanted!  I’m hoping to get into movie making as it’s a great way of showing Sign-Rite at work.  Anyway it’s not for me to decide if I could make it big in Hollywood, see what you think.

And that’s a wrap, as they say in the business.

Flagging-up a solution

Here’s a good example of what can be achieved over a cuppa with a pencil, some paper and imagination.  A retail customer in Wales wanted us to help them literally stand-out on the high street, using flags or pennants.  This is quite a tricky request technically but Sign-Rite likes a challenge.

These were the problems:

Any flag would protrude into the pavement so a narrow profile was essential.  As a semi-permanent item it would have to be resilient in all weathers and not look tatty.  Thief proof security was important while still being removable at the end of the day.

A Feather Flag ticks the boxes for visual impact and durability.  It’s tall, narrow shape doesn’t obstruct a walkway.  As they normally stand in fields at shows or are dotted around industrial parks they are proven in all weathers.

However, the big puzzle was how to attach such an item to a shop front?  Feather Flag poles are mounted on a big spike for pushing into the ground, with a bearing so it can spin round in the wind.  We needed our installation to be fixed rigidly and not spin round at all so a bit of ingenuity was called for.

Firstly, I discarded the standard (fibreglass) pole and mounting spike and used a length of steel tube which I curved to give a nice radius.  This fitted inside the flag’s hem which gave it good rigidity.  I then designed a nice mounting bracket to be fixed to the shop-front and popped over to a local engineering firm for the necessary fabrication, welding and painting.  Now, the flag pole can be slotted into place every morning and fixed with a padlocked clip.  Each night it is simply unlocked, unclipped and stored away safely.

Incidentally, I saved the customer the cost of a site visit by using Google’s Street View for the first time.  This enabled Sign-Rite to submit a quotation and mock-up of the finished job from the comfort of HQ and speeded up delivery to the customer.

A present surprise

A country customer walked into Sign-Rite with an unusual request last month and I jumped at the chance to tackle something a bit different.  She wanted a bespoke present for her farmer husband, something personal to celebrate the pride he feels in his prize pigs.

I thought about the various bits of kit a farmer might use: vehicles, gates, barns, water and feed troughs etc.  These only lend themselves to simple signs or stickers, OK, but not the best present.  Talking to Mrs Farmer I discovered that a pig farmer uses a board for herding the animals to and fro.  A flat, rigid item – basically, a sign!  Cut out some hand-grips, decorate with a pig photo and the herd name and she had her solution.

Once Mrs Farmer was happy I needed an image of one of the prized Gloucester Old Spots.  They were rather shy and wouldn’t pose but a photo-library produced a suitable image.

And Mr Farmer had a lovely birthday.

Allow me to introduce myself

Welcome to John Spilsbury’s first blog entry.

I’m 50 and have spent over 30 years in the sign industry.  A lot has changed in that time – when I started signwriting in the traditional way I used a paintbrush and marl stick.  Now it’s all about computers, digital printing, LED illumination, complete vehicle wraps and eco-options.

Every sign job is different and many involve solving a problem – that’s what we’re good at.  We take different materials, add wording, pictures and symbols and use them to give our customers what they need.

Some solutions are simple, but what I like are the tricky jobs, the real puzzlers.  I can really get my teeth stuck into these and besides, it’s what makes life interesting.  Our company – Sign-Rite UK Ltd – is a small and friendly family firm with over 25 years of sign experience to call on when tackling these.

Led by our “Creative Genius”, our “Networker” and “Engine Room” provide sign solutions.  We have a resident “Problem Solver” who steps in when required and sorts out all manner of odd-jobs and of course, backroom staff who multi-task the marketing, accounts etc…  Lastly, there’s me, who is a bit of everyone else all rolled into one.

I’ve lived in Herefordshire most of my life but have travelled all over Britain and Europe both for fun and work.  My main interests are: cycling, music and motorsport and I try to get into the garden when I can.  There’s occasionally a glass of wine to be enjoyed along the way too.

Every month or so I’m going to pick a topic that interests me and which you might find informative.

You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look into what is involved in the design and production of signs and how to choose the best of many options to suit your needs.
